Balaur bondoc was named after a dragon from Romanian mythology. Balaur was discovered in a region that once formed an island in the ancient Tethys Sea now known as Hateg Island, which is sometimes refered to as "the Island of Dwarf Dinosaurs." Hateg Island is known for a number of dinosaurs showing evidence of Island Dwarfism.

Balaur was once considered to be a member of the Dromeosauridae (raptor) family, but is now considered to belong to Avialae, the family that includes modern birds! Each of Balaur's feet had not one, but two sickle-shaped killing claws.
